Ubuntu Village

Ubuntu Village, located in the West Ward of Newark, on S. 10th Street, between South Orange Avenue and 13th Ave., is currently a vacant infill lot and will be developed by Nehemiah Rising in conjunction with Returning Citizens Support Group and Essex Together. The 42 unit project will consist of a mix of 1BR (5), 2BR (21), and 3BR (14) apartments, with 25% reserved for returning citizens. 7,294sf of the project will be dedicated to ground floor offices and community Space. This space will be used by the Returning Citizens Support Group, whose mission is to reintegrate returning citizens into society, to provide on-site services to justice-impacted residents as well as services to the community at large.

The development team has chosen the name Ubuntu Village for this project. “Ubuntu” is an ancient African word meaning “humanity to others.” It is often described as a reminder that “I am what I am because of who we all are.” This is intended to be the spirit of the project, individual successes fostered by collective effort.
